Understanding the Importance of Forklift Training Certification

Forklift training certification ensures that operators of this heavy equipment possess the knowledge, capability, and safety benchmarks related to their job. All certification programs must adhere to standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Under federal and state laws, there are two essential requirements to get this certification.

OSHA Requirement

The OSHA requires all forklift operators to obtain forklift certification training as stated in (OSHA 1910.178 (i)(6)). The proper training program with an evaluation must be completed before a worker can operate industrial forklifts or any warehouse equipment. The purpose of this certification is to lessen the number of injuries caused by hazardous lift truck use in the workplace. It benefits employers since insurance cost is reduced along with possible damages to the forklift and property.

License or Certificate

The license comes in the form of a certificate. It specifies that the operator has been properly trained and evaluated by the authorized supervisor to safely operate the equipment. A certification includes the following details:

    Name of forklift operator

    Date of training and evaluation

Identity of the supervisor or manager who conducted the training and assessment.

According to OSHA standards, employers must certify in writing that each worker was trained and evaluated before being given a Forklift training certification.

Different Processes

The certification process may vary depending on who provides the training. Employers must provide a formal instructional or educational module on forklift operations. This can consist of a lecture, online training sessions with videos, printed materials, study guides, and other important information on forklift operation and safety.

OSHA also obliges hands-on training sessions at the warehouse location. Training should be conducted by individuals who have knowledge, capability, and experience to train forklift operators. This will ensure that operators are trained and certified to deal with the difficulties of their specific work environment.

Once the program is completed, the evaluation will determine if the training complies with the OSHA 1910.178 standards and also cover forklift and workplace-related topics.

Learnings

The forklift certification training covers the following topics but could also include other relevant subject matter:

  1.     Detailed forklift operating instructions
  2.     Differences between forklifts
  3.     Proper care and maintenance
  4.     Correct maneuvering and steering
  5.     Visibility
  6.     Surface or road conditions
  7.     Load handling
  8.     Pedestrian traffic
  9.     Narrow aisle operation
  10.     Ramps and slopes
  11.     Hazardous conditions
